The heart of Pindos beats in Aspropotamos. The local villages around Aspropotamos are more than a living proof of the history of the Municipality of Trikala. In this place, untouched nature alongside the waters of River Acheloos has given birth to something mythical. The villages of Anthousa, Chaliki, Krania, Katafyto, Milia, Agia Paraskevi, Kalliroim Polythea and Stephani, as well as the nature around them constitute an area that has been included in Natura 2000. Therefore, they are a treasure for all nature lovers. Standing Stone mansions, bridges that bond people’s life with the river, monasteries and churches and traditional watermills create a landscape, which we should definitely visit and experience with all our senses. It is a place, where the adventurous ones will have the chance to go rafting and master the surging waters of River Acheloos, ride a bike and go hiking.
In 2,295 meters, near the clouds, in Mountain Lakmos and the alpine Drakolimni Verligka we see a stunning landscape that is indicative of the greatness of Pindos. This is where we find architectural monuments from a different time, when stone was not only a main material but also a creation tool. One of these sites is the Holy Monastery of the Holy Cross in Doliana, which is as rare as its 13 domes.
Dropping down to 1,150 m., the large village of Krania was a center of weaving and now remains an imposing, stone and graceful place, offering pleasant travel experiences and a place for visitors to stop and admire the greatness of nature.
