Gomfoi – An archaeological garden of Thessaly

Gomfoi, old name “Rapsista”, and the new name comes from the site of ancient Gomfoi, of primordial archaeological significance. The archaeological site is located at the boundaries with Mouzaki, Karditsa.
So, this town of high strategic importance, played the role of the guard and interrupted the route to Estiaiotida (namely, the area of Trikala of ancient Thessaly), through the passage of Pyli, between Tzoumerka mountains and Koziakas mountain, as well as the route to Thessaliotida (the respective area in Karditsa), between Fteri mountain and Agrafa, through Mouzaki. That is why the residents had fortified the town with double walls: an exterior one with large boulders of limestone or stone, and an interior one with raw, mud-brick slabs covered with tiles. Part of the wall can be seen in the east, while part of the Acropolis has been found in the Forest of Palaiomonastiros.
